Letter to Mara 1

Mara,

Today we found out that you are a girl. We named you Mara Meadow. It is the most beautiful name I have ever heard in my whole life. Every time I hear it spoken aloud I feel such overwhelming peace. I can’t wait to meet you my sweet little girl.

I watched you squirm around on the little computer screen at the doctor’s office today and fought back tears. In the pictures that the doctor printed out, you look like an angel. You are so beautiful already. I could see your tiny little hands and feet. I could see your little heart and I could watch it beating. I think I could watch that forever and not get tired of it. You, my little girl, are precious.

When your mom and I left the doctor’s office this afternoon, we went to one of our favorite restaurants to celebrate your life. Your mom was glowing the whole way. It is beautiful how her face lights up when I say your name. The whole way to the restaurant we took turns calling your grandparents and your aunts and uncles. They are all so excited to meet you. I know your grandparents are praying for you like crazy. So many people will be affected by your arrival into this world. We are all cheering for you.

The sunset tonight was amazing. The colors were so rich. It was red and orange and the rest of the sky was such a deep blue. I wondered if you and I would ever sit somewhere together and watch the sun go down. I want to. I want to just sit and listen to you talk. Whatever you want to say is fine. I just want to listen. I made a commitment to myself to make sure that happens.

While I was watching the sky change colors and get darker, I was listening to a song by Brett Dennen. The song talks about how messy this world is. It is filled with hate and selfishness. You are coming into a world that holds so many people prisoner to their own desires. The song paints a hopeless picture and then claims, “Love will come set me free, I know it will…” He is right little Mara. Love can set you free. Love is the only thing that brings any hope or peace into this world and Mara, I can promise you that you will be loved. Very much. My love for you will only grow stronger as I watch you discover who God created you to be. I will do everything in my power to make sure that you are cared for and that you know beyond the shadow of a doubt that you are loved. I am excited to see where love is going to lead you. Maybe one day you can tell me all about it over a sunset.

May you be safe until the day God allows us to meet.

Love,
Your dad
